Client Spotlight: Maine Mobile Health Program (Part 2)

March 16, 2018 | 0

We first talked about the Maine Mobile Health Program (MMHP) back in 2013. At the time, The MMHP had a La Boit mobile medical clinic out in the field for three years. Operations Coordinator Paula Nicholas remarked that the nurse practitioners were thrilled with the clinic.

The Maine Mobile Health Program was founded in 1991 to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate primary and preventive medical, dental, vision, and mental health services to Maine’s growing seasonal farm worker community. During the blueberry, apple, egg, wreathing, tree-planting, and broccoli harvests, MMHP services approximately 1,500 migrant farmworkers who arrive from areas such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica.

In 2016, MMHP acquired a second truck, which was dedicated to MMHP doctor, Carol Eckert, for what the organization’s representatives called, “her unwavering commitment to Maine’s farmworkers.”

Both of MMHP’s mobile clinics feature two fully stocked exam rooms and diagnostic equipment. Each mobile clinic features a bathroom and a small central room which doubles as a reception room and space for behavioral health counseling sessions. Another benefit of using a mobile clinic is that outreach specialists can directly facilitate connections to social services, a food pantry, and legal aid when appropriate.

Through the use of mobile clinics, MMHP is innovatively maximizing access to high quality health services for Maine’s migrant workers. The nature of seasonal farm work means that workers are often susceptible to harsh outdoor conditions that lead to heat stroke, dehydration, malnourishment, skin lesions, and sleep deprivation. MMHP’s mobile units allow workers to receive thorough medical and dental check-ups, diagnoses, and prescriptions without ever leaving the farm.

Thanks to its modern and thoughtful approach to providing personalized medical attention to a population with great need, Maine Mobile Health Program is the proud recipient of multiple awards for nonprofit excellence and innovation. Clearly, MMHP has set the bar high for other health organizations to follow.
