Campbell University in North Carolina was founded in 1887 by young baptist minister J.A. Campbell. What started as a small rural school of only 16 students has grown to become a cornerstone of their community in Buies Creek, just about halfway between Raleigh and Fayetteville.

Campbell University states their mission as preparing graduates to lead “purposeful lives and meaningful service.” They take that mission seriously, always looking for ways to expand their services to help serve their students and community. According to the history section on their website, in 1986 Campbell University opened the first pharmaceutical school in the U.S. in over 40 years, and in 2013 it opened the first medical school in North Carolina in over 30 years. Today, Campbell University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine is the first and only osteopathic medical school operating in North Carolina.

“As a student at Campbell Medicine, you will have the opportunity to take part in a program widely recognized for its excellence.” their website states. “We bring together teams to solve health problems in our local communities as well as globally.”

The overall mission of the university along with the goals of their medical school are perfectly realized in their new Mobile Health Education Clinics (MHEC) program. The MHEC program includes a fleet of THREE La Boit-built mobile medical clinics (two 40ft and one 26ft), that serve not only as teaching centers, but as community health vehicles.

In a press release about the clinics, Bob Schmid, assistant professor of simulation medicine and technical director of the medical school’s simulation center, describes each unit as having a separate waiting room, two fully equipped exam rooms, a lab space, refrigeration for immunization materials, and educational systems to provide information on primary care issues and health care concerns.

“What can these vehicles do? What can’t they do?” he exclaims.

For example, during the first week of June, the MHEC fleet and its team provided health assessments, COVID testing and administered COVID vaccines for 76 migrant farmers and their families. They enrolled 100 patients, including children, for continued follow-up and primary care.

“This has been a real success,” stated Dr. Joe Cacioppo, chair of community and global health and associate professor of emergency medicine. “We’re identifying so many people that really need ongoing care. I think I’m going to have an overbooked clinic for the next several weeks!”

The mobile units were made possible by the $6 million grant Campbell University received from the North Carolina General Assembly in 2020 as part of federal COVID-19 relief funds.

Campbell President Dr. J. Bradley Creed said the mobile units are helping Campbell make a big difference in the lives of its students and in the communities they serve.

“A school like Campbell has a moral obligation to the area in which it’s located and beyond that, like concentric circles moving out,” Creed said. “And so we do this as an educational institution to help our state make life better for people who are lacking primary care.”
