Vecinos, Inc. Mobile Medical Clinic (Video Tour)

Vencinos Inc. is a nonprofit healthcare organization that serves farmworkers in western North Carolina by advocating for the improvement of farmworkers and their families’ wellness with health care, education, and community partnerships.

They talk about their 20 year history on their website, where we learn that in April of 2001 founders Josie Ellis, RN and Dr. Mark Heffington, first began visiting migrant labor camps in Jackson County, NC with the help from a state grant.

“Volunteering a lot of their time, Josie and Mark pioneered the medical outreach model,” their website states.

Three years later, they were incorporated as a nonprofit organization, Vecinos, Inc.

“Vecinos means ‘neighbors’ in Spanish,” the website goes on to say. “And this is the foundation of the organization’s mission.”

In those 20 years, Vecinos has grown to offer health care and case management for all farmworkers and their families in the eight western-most counties of North Carolina. Their primary and flagship service is the mobile medical program, which visits 15-20 camps across the mountainous region with a medical provider, nurse, and bilingual and bi-cultural outreach staff on board.

“Migrant farmworkers face extreme barriers to care,” their website states. “Vecinos reduces those barriers by providing free mobile services through bilingual staff with specific training on agricultural medicine while on the farmworkers’ schedules.”

Being that all their patients are spread out over large distances, the mobile clinic is a key component to Vencinos’ success in providing the best healthcare and education to the largest number of migrant farmworkers. In a video tour posted on their Facebook, Marianne Martínez, the Director of Vencinos, Inc., claims the mobile clinic has plenty of room to serve patients.

“In total we can bring 16 members on outreach with us at any point,” she says.

As of right now, Vecinos, Inc. employs three professional and compassionate full-time bilingual staff, who provide case management, including interpretation and transportation to specialist appointments. Their aim is to secure additional funding in these next several years in order to increase their staffing capacity and to serve more farmworkers.
