Spay Neuter Assistance Program of North Carolina

Dr. Laureen Bartfield, President and lead veterinarian for Spay Neuter Assistance Program of North Carolina (SNAP-NC), is no stranger to La Boit Specialty Vehicles. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Bartfield’s organization has purchased five La Boit vehicles, the first in 1999 and the most recent in 2019.

Their newest truck, a 33′ Spay/Neuter truck was built on a 2019 Freightliner diesel chassis. It features dual surgery tables, lots of kennels and tons of storage.

“Its a beast and so gorgeous!,” says Koni Wade, National Sales Director for La Boit Specialty Vehicles and long-time friend of Dr. Bartfield. “Dr. Bartfield and her team do so many wonderful things for the animals of North Carolina.”

SNAP-NC was one of the first non-profit programs nationally to utilize a fleet of mobile clinics to provide low-cost spay/neuter and other veterinary care directly to underserved communities. Since inception, they have cared for over 145,000 pets in the 12 counties they service in North Carolina.

All you have to do is read some of the words from their clients to see how SNAP-NC is making an impact, one operation at a time…

“We had about 20 cats mostly consisting of pregnant females dump out onto our off the road property,” wrote one client on Facebook. “And they were amazing in helping us get this cats all spayed or neutered and all of their shots so that we were able to adopt them out! They all found wonderful homes! Love these guys!”

In order to reach the most amount of animals, SNAP-NC deploys the mobile clinics to a variety of different locations in their 12 county service area. They are often parked full-time at shelters that don’t have their own surgery capabilities. They also frequently utilize the parking lots of businesses.

By utilizing the mobile model, SNAP-NC has been able to attain a very large outreach that they may not have been able to without mobile. If they were to build brick and mortar surgery facilities in each county, costs could end up prohibitively expensive.

And that’s been the goal all along, to reach as many pets as possible. For those who work combating pet over-population, they know that volume is key. That’s why SNAP-NC focuses exclusively on spay/neuter. They do offer vaccinations, but only during the spay/neuter process. Dr. Bartfield tells us that their core mission is pet-overpopulation, but they hope by offering the basic other services at the same time, they are educating the pet owner on other important health considerations.

La Boit Specialty Vehicles is proud to be a part of SNAP-NC’s mission for the past 20 years. Here’s to the next 20!
